Kratom and Sweating: Understanding Physiological Responses to Kratom
July 4, 2024Mitragyna speciosa, usually referred to as kratom, a tree native to Southeast Asia, is becoming increasingly popular in other parts of the world. This is due to its many properties derived from its unique mix of alkaloids in its leaves. Users report various effects, such as increased energy and focus, euphoria, mood enhancement, and pain relief. Some individuals are using kratom as a replacement for opioid use, claiming it’s a safe and effective method of harm reduction.
However, with the good can come some bad. Some kratom users report increased thirst and issues with hydration. Does kratom cause dehydration? Let’s explore the latest research insights into kratom and dehydration.
Kratom User Experiences and Anecdotal Evidence of Dehydration
Before we dive into research insights on kratom and any correlation to dehydration, let’s take a look at what actual kratom users are saying about its use and dehydration. There are far more kratom users than there have been studies regarding its side effects. While only anecdotal, the experiences of kratom users are still valid.
Many new users report being thirsty after using kratom. While there’s little scientific research addressing this, the number of individuals who report feeling thirsty when using kratom does suggest that it could have diuretic effects. Dry mouth is an often reported side effect, and without remedying it, dehydration could follow.
When kratom is used in small doses, it produces a stimulating effect and could raise the body’s metabolism. This increase in body metabolism could potentially increase fluid loss through increased sweating. Also worth noting is that some users report a substantial increase in urination when using kratom, which could easily lead to dehydration unless the individual replaces the lost fluids by drinking more water.
Signs of Kratom Dehydration
The symptoms of kratom dehydration do not differ from other methods of becoming dehydrated. Signs of dehydration can include:
- Dry mouth: Dry mouth is a telltale sign of dehydration. Severe dehydration can make swallowing and sometimes speaking difficult.
- Dizziness: Dehydration can cause blood pressure to drop, often resulting in feeling dizzy or faint.
- Fatigue: Feeling physically and mentally tired is a sign of dehydration.
- Muscle cramps: Without adequate water in the body, muscles can often cramp.
- Dark-colored urine: Dark yellow or brownish urine is a sign of dehydration.

Research Insights on Kratom and Dehydration
There hasn’t been much if any, research directly related to kratom and dehydration. Most scientific research involving kratom has been to study its effectiveness as a pain reliever, how it affects the opioid receptors in the brain, its use for mood disorders, and other therapeutic uses.
However, there are quite a few studies that do make claims of kratom being a diuretic, meaning that it helps to increase urination. Increased urination is undoubtedly a factor contributing to dehydration. A 2017 study does mention kratom having diuretic effects.
Although there haven’t been any direct studies about kratom causing dehydration, with the amount of anecdotal evidence, it does seem to be entirely possible. Based on its known side effects, such as nausea, sweating, dry mouth, and increased urination, it could be assumed that indirectly, kratom could lead to dehydration. While users do claim that kratom makes them thirsty, this is not sufficient evidence that kratom use can directly cause dehydration.

Hydration Tips for Kratom Users
Those new to kratom could potentially experience dehydration if they don’t manage their intake of water, especially those individuals who use larger serving sizes or daily use. However, as those with more kratom experience have learned, this can be easily remedied. Anyone using kratom regularly should pay close attention to their hydration.
- Take water breaks: Regular kratom users should ensure that they stay properly hydrated daily. Daily reminders to drink water can help prevent dehydration, no matter its root cause.
- Adjust kratom dosage: If the amount of kratom you usually use is causing extreme thirst, consider adjusting your dosage. Everyone reacts differently to kratom.
- Use kratom with water: If you typically use kratom blended into a beverage, consider mixing it with water to ensure you stay hydrated.
- Dietary changes: If you’re not the type of person who naturally drinks water to cure thirst, consider eating foods with a high water content. Good suggestions include watermelon, strawberries, oranges, and celery.
Kratom, Dehydration, and What the Experts Say
Unfortunately, there hasn’t yet been a significant study about kratom and dehydration. However, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence to support that claim, even if it may be an indirect cause. Regular kratom users are encouraged to monitor their intake of water to guard against dehydration.
